Modern stereotypes imposed on us with adventurous movies and novels inspire uneducated minds with the idea that if they go after the treasure, they will certainly need to go to Egypt (remember the famous Lara Kroft), or in the Caribbean (Pirate`s Gold – who doesn’t know about such!), or in Latin America (Indians of different tribes were only interested in digging gold for posterity!). Scientific, historical or any other supporting data on the above places in the world exists to this day. Statistics show that the greatest number of "hideouts" was found in the grounds, which were often passed from hand to hand. Riots, and invasions of the enemy were the main driving factors for humanity, stimulating to make stashes.
As for Ukraine and Odessa region in particular, there has been enough of change in the governmental structure. But why people almost never find treasures? The answer is simple they do not search. If Odessa region was dug up as in the time the sands of Egypt were, you can be sure that the south of Ukraine would have long since become a world leader in the number of detected treasures! Today more and more people understand this and begin to dig...
Already in 1996, Ukrainian historian N.F. Kotlyar, has admitted in an interview with Yana Sokolovskaia on the pages of All-Union newspaper "Izvestia" (issue number 97) that he developed a schema that defines where it is worth looking for treasures. He gave the pattern of their hiding of accidental finds in different places and times. Do not look in Galicia, where the money rotated a lot but the turnover made it impossible to lie hoards. Should not look along the trade routes where caravans almost did not stop on the road, guarding against attacks of Tatars. The most common findings occur in older cities and large churches. Most often, the treasures were found in the walls of castles, cathedrals and churches, fortified by fire. The most famous of these treasures was found immured in the tower of graph Potockyy in Berdichev. On the second place - are mounds. Artifacts found in them occupy the lion's share of museum exhibits of Ukraine.
From the places still unexplored by archaeologists, remains: a mound Karatka (Zaporozhye) and Bear mound. In the last one, according to the legend, there is an animal skin stuffed with coins. On the island of Khortytsya, according to local patriarchs, there are buried gold and silver coins, and somewhere here, you can search for "treasure of Sagajdak" who buried the treasury in the hour of danger "on the Middle cliff".
Nikolai Fedorovich for many years spent his vacation in Olbia, but personally did not find the treasure. In the life of the historian he was lucky only once, when in his presence, was found the treasure in the village Glinyanoe (Kyiv region), which contained silver buttons and ornaments in the form of earrings and rings. There were over 1500 coins dated XVII century!
Not uncommon to run into a treasure at agricultural operations. Helmet of Yaroslav the Wise was found during plowing! Similarly, the greatest treasure was found of ancient hryvnia (more than 2000) (Gotlandfermer on the island in Sweden).
Conclusions of Professor are considered correct but not uncontroversial. If we talk about the treasures of antiquity, the circuit works without a glitch. But what about the recent history? Galicia after the "voluntary" annexation to the USSR and wars with the nationalists... And Black Sea region steppes, that have emerged from the two wars, where carts were dragged with the looted valuables. What about the chases, ambushes, skirmishes with looters and whole gangs of deserters does not it become a reason to create hiding places in the gullies and mounds? Studying the history of the southern Ukraine sometimes it seems that you can circle any area on the map and start digging! And it's not only in built up and populated areas.
In the early forties of the 20th century Hydrographic Office Complex Expedition began operation "Hlavsa-morputi". September 14, 1940, topographical party, from the board of hydrographic vessel "North", landed on the northern island of Thaddeus. Their workers found sticking out of the ground copper pots. A detailed study of the place where it was found, made it possible to discover an ancient ax, scissors, beads, bells, and rotten convolution bellows.
September 26 when performing hydrographic work it was found that in this place once stood a small mound of small pebbles. During the excavation of the shaft there were found bent copper plate and pewter. In the remains of fur there were a lot of coins of ellipsoid shape, as well as rings, earrings and pectoral crosses. Completed the list of finds of ancient musket - a curved trunk. According to these subjects, researchers discovered that the findings relate to 1610, when at the mouth of the Yenisei appeared kochi of Kurkina with a decree that banned sailing the Northern Sea Route, which was released in 1616-1619. The hypothesis was confirmed by the numismatic analysis, that dated finds to the first quarter of the XVII century.
In order not to bore honorable treasure - lovers, we will not pause for a long time. We will continue talking about the legends in the following article and will start with Mangazeya.
