Past Sunday an archaeological expedition 53 camp hosted guests from Odessa. Representatives from key travel companies in our city visited Lower Dniester expedition to see the willingness of scientists to host tourists...
The sky clouded over Ovidiopol just before the arrival of the bus with the guests. It seemed that the weather was against the fact that archaeologists had a chance to show their best side. It began to rain, therefore travel agencies had to "hide" in a large tent field exposure right off the road. What should have been brought to the eyes at the final stage of the tour (findings of the expedition), had to be shown right away. It is difficult to understand the full value of findings and the complexity associated with their discovery and recovery without a full understanding of the limits and scope of the fortress, especially without seeing the excavations themselves. The rain did not stop, that’s why the situation was only getting worse.
At first the expedition leader, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Igor Sapozhnikov has told everything that was planned, after which he had to improvise as much as the weather required. It was a blessing that a scientist has an encyclopedic knowledge what in fact, saved the situation. Only after the weather calmed down, employees of tourism industry were able to go around the object of study and look at the work that was done. Two months – is a short time for a scientific expedition, however, archaeologists had what to show. These are: revealed foundations of the buildings that were constructed on the castle territory, and those pits in which were found objects of Greek culture IV century BC. Guest impressed by eastern rampart of the fortress (or rather the remains of the shaft), which retained the ancient fortification relief, despite two long centuries.
As a result, despite the unfriendly weather reception, archaeologists managed to show Adzhider at it best. Although archaeological tourism is still not as popular in Ukraine, as in European and American countries, representatives of travel agencies are confident that this type of tourism is simply obliged to settle down in Odessa region. The rich history of our region can tell a lot about different cultures that inhabited in Odessa region at different periods of time.
